In the ding-ding battle for La Liga supremacy, Paget overtook Short Heath on Tuesday night at the Dome thanks to a 2-0 victory against Rosary and a 4-0 walkover win over Hillstone (who failed to show).
In what turned out to be a shortened game vs Rosary, the P’s started brightly pinning their opponents back and were duly rewarded when a shot from distance was parried by Rosary’s ‘keeper with the rebound slotted home from close-range. Rosary eventually settled and fashioned a glorious opportunity to equalise only to see their striker’s effort pushed behind by Paget’s number one. Paget though didn’t have to wait long for a second goal as a devastating counter-attack, following a cleared Rosary corner, sealed the three points.
Lyndon Green were also in action at the Dome and they opened up against Rosary who arrived late at the venue after a horrendous journey from Alum Rock. Poor Rosary marking from a corner allowed Green to go ahead and they almost doubled their lead moments later but were denied by an excellent save from Rosary’s goalkeeper. Rosary spurned a great chance to level the count when their striker went through on goal but he scuffed his shot wide. LG then wrapped up the points with a second goal after a swift move lead to a smart finish.
The South Yardley side then saw off Colebourne, 3-0, again in a shorter than normal game, to take maximum points back to their Wensley Road home.
In the evening’s other match, St Barnabas were comfortable 5-0 winners over Colebourne.
Once again then, Paget lead the way and have a three point lead over reigning champions Short Heath who, however, have two games left to Paget’s one; Paget also have a superior goal difference and know that a win in their final game at Mapledene, will seal the title. Mapledene themselves are embroiled in a battle for third place with Lyndon Green and the two meet at Mapledene’s Arena next Tuesday so the picture may become clearer after that.
