Oh So Tight at Top of Girls League!

By Joe Perkins

Hillstone and Paget lead way; STM and SSPP lie in wait; Abbey also in title race

The second round of matches in the girls’ league took place on Wednesday and as the dust settled on another exciting afternoon’s football, the top of the table is as tight as possible with one point separating Hillstone at the summit, from SS Peter and Paul in fourth.
Paget began the afternoon in pole position but would drop down a place despite two wins over rivals Short Heath (2-1) and Rosary (3-0) and a 2-2 draw with SSPP. Hillstone joined Paget on 17 points but leapt above them on goal difference after their two wins, 9-0 vs St Bernadette’s and 4-0 vs Rosary, and a point gained in a 1-1 draw with Short Heath.
St Thomas More and SSPP are both just the one point back but Tommy’s sit third due to their superior goal difference. STM looked to be heading for the top of the table as they eased to a 9-0 victory over St Bernadette’s and a battling 2-0 triumph over Abbey but a shock 3-1 defeat to Parkfield, meant they missed that opportunity. SSPP secured victories over Lea Forest (2-0) and Court Farm (1-0) as well as sharing the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Paget. However, in their final game of the night, a late penalty saw them slip to a 2-1 loss in the derby with Abbey.
Short Heath remain in contention as they scooped seven points from their four games, including wins over Featherstone and Lea Forest.
Having won three of their games, including that derby win over SSPP, Abbey are also just three points away from SSPP and the top four.
A further three points adrift are four sides, Featherstone, Timberley and Parkfield. Featherstone had a fruitful evening with a couple of wins from their four games, whilst Timberley stuttered slightly winning just one of their three games, that, 2-0 against Court Farm. Parkfield provided the surprise of the night and though they began with a 0-0 draw with neighbours, Rosary, they then won their next three games, 4-0 vs Bernie’s, that 3-1 win over STM and a 2-1 victory over Featherstone.
There was scant consolation for the bottom four with only Lea Forest and Rosary picking up a point each.
So, as we look ahead to the final round of matches in the girls’ league on Wednesday 20th March, it really is all to play for and the title is well and truly up for grabs – and among the final set of matches that day is Paget vs STM. Tasty!
