Abbey Advance as SSPP Falter!

Black and Amber double delight; SSPP suffer play-off set-back; Rosary nick Rock derby.

Abbey were the big winners on Thursday evening as the Premier Division resumed again rolling into Castle Vale Stadium, where six other schools were ready for battle.

At the start of play Abbey were eleven points behind leaders St Thomas More’s but by 5.30pm, the Black and Amber brigade were within five points – both having now played eight games. Abbey kicked off with a 3-0 win over Lea Forest before netting five without reply against Heathlands.

Whilst Abbey went towards cementing second place in the division, their Erdington rivals SS Peter and Paul, lost ground in the play-off race as they suffered a surprise defeat to Featherstone, whose goalkeeper inspired a 2-1 victory. SSPP picked themselves though to dispatch Elms Farm 7-1.

With Court Farm unable to attend, Highfield were left with just the one game, an Alum Rock derby versus Rosary. Highfield are harbouring play-off aspirations but they were dented by Rosary’s solid and stoic defence and though rode it its luck at times, it protected a 1-0 lead gained midway through the first half – a fine solo run and finish from Rosary’s lone striker.

In the evening’s other games, Lea Forest didn’t dwell on their defeat to Abbey as they hit Heathlands for six to at least take home three points for their efforts and Featherstone almost completed a six-point haul but were denied at the death as a long-range Elms Farm strike went through the Feather’s ‘keeper’s legs.
