It's Double-Bubble Bernie's!

6-point Bernie's ignite play-off push; 'mead suffer back-to-back defeats; point takes Abbey top.

After 3 losses in a row at the start of the season, St Bernadette’s kick-started their La Liga campaign with a fine double at Brownmead on Tuesday evening. Bernie’s Boss, Mr M-J, made some rash changes ahead of his side’s two games and was also without two of his best players but his team still inflicted a first defeat of the season – 2-1 – on Brownmead. The black and blues then ground out another narrow win, this time by one goal to nil against a battling Colebourne side. The Coles quickly licked their wounds and in their second game compounded a miserable evening for the hosts by defeating them 2-0.

Hillstone welcomed the Abbey to their Shard End abode for an eagerly anticipated clash between two side vying for the La Liga title. A disastrous start to the game saw Abbey fall behind within 30 seconds as sloppy passing between defenders gifted Hillstone a 1-0 lead. Abbey battled back though and deservedly equalised before the half way point.
As the second half progressed the large pitch took its toll as play got stretched and teams resorted to long balls and whilst the game could have swung either way, it eventually concluded as it had been at half-time and the 1-1 result was a fair reflection.

Across in Kingstanding, Maryvale were hosting a St Barnabas side still to register a point in their debut season and on a newly-mown pitch bathed in early Spring sunshine, the two sides offered up a compelling, end-to-end encounter. The home side struggled to break down a resilient St Barnabas rear-guard but as the interval approached, finally punctured a hole in the visitors’ defence when a whipped-in ball was superbly headed in from around 6 yards out. Chances came and went, especially for Maryvale but Barnie’s hung in and with the very last kick of the game salvaged a point for themselves after a fine low drive flew past the ‘vale ‘keeper.

At the end of all of that action, Abbey lead a fragmented table by a solitary point over a Short Heath side with three games in hand but with teams such as Yardley having only played twice this season, there is still a lot of football to be played and the picture will be an ever-changing one.
