Defending champions Short Heath made a flying start on the opening night of the 2024-25 Girls League season winning all four of their games and they are joined at the top of the table by Rosary, who also took maximum points on a chilly late-November evening at Yardley 5s.
Twelve schools have entered the league this season and all turned up with hope and optimism in abundance and there were no lack of thrills and spills on a thoroughly enjoyable night.
Short Heath sat out the first round of matches but when they did kick off they were quick about their work, seeing off Lea Forest, 5-0. Heath backed that up with a slightly fortuitous 1-0 win over Hillstone. A further 5-0 win against Timberley along with a narrow 1-0 over Mapledene meant the reigning champions would finish the night top of the table.
Rosary enjoyed their night as well, with wins against Paget, 2-1, Mapledene, 4-1, Lea Forest 3-0 and Colebourne, 3-1; only goal difference separates them from Short Heath. And Abbey are the third team to win all of their games but in a very different manner: three 1-0 wins against Lea Forest, Colebourne and Paget, together with a 2-1 triumph versus Timberley, sees them tucked behind Rosary again on goal difference.
Abbey’s local rivals, SS Peter and Paul are the only other side to go unbeaten as they took nine points with wins against Court Farm, Lea Forest and St Bernadette’s but were denied a maximum 12 points by Hillstone who held them to a 2-2 draw; SSPP sit in fourth place. Hillstone themselves lie in fifth spot, three points behind P and P. Timberley’s two wins over
Colebourne and Court Farm, sees them in sixth position.
Court Farm, Paget and Colebourne occupy the next three spots, each having won out of their four games whilst Mapledene, St Bernadette’s and Lea Forest will have to wait until 2025 and the next round of matches, to try to open their accounts.
All to play for then when the Girls League returns in early March.
