The final league fixtures in the ESPSFA League for this calendar year took place under the lightship the AVFC Dome on Thursday evening and it was the amber and black of Abbey which will go into the new year top of the Premier Division.
Abbey went into Thursday’s games looking to preserve their 100% start to the season and in the process, leap-frog St Thomas More’s and top the table - they did both. The Amber and Blacks had a tough start: the derby with perennial rivals, SS Peter and Paul. In a tight and tense affair, Abbey emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win. They then backed that result up with a 4-1 win over Highfield.
Timberley, we’re the only other side in the division to have a 100% record going into this evening’s fixtures and they smoothed their way to maintaining it by firstly seeing off a battling Featherstone side, 2-0 and secondly defeating a beleaguered SSPP - no doubt still reeling from that earlier derby defeat - 3-1.
Court Farm were the third side on the night to win both games. Farm began by downing Highfield, 4-1, then storming to a 10-0 triumph against a tiring Featherstone outfit.
So, as we head into 2025 unbeaten Abbey lead the way, three points clear of St Thomas More’s and Timberley, who, as previously mentioned, possess a game in hand - fun and games await in the new year!
