Two wins from their two games at Castle Vale Stadium on Thursday evening secured a play-off spot and sent them to the top of the table.
As the wind - and then the rain - whipped across the stadium, Timberley and Rosary took to the field first and played out an enjoyable 0-0 draw. Both teams had chances to win it with Rosary coming closest when a midfielder's long-range strike was expertly tipped on to the crossbar by Timberley's acrobatic 'keeper. The stalemate though was indicative of both side's mid-table standing.
And so to Abbey. The Amber'n'Blacks began against Timberley and an even first 6 or so minutes was then punctuated with a wonderful strike from Abbey's number ten - no chance for Timbers 'keeper this time. Abbey continued to press but had to wait until midway through the second half before striking again - another wonder-strike from their number ten star. As Timberley visibly tired, Abbey create more chances and eventually grabbed a third late on following a lovely passing move.
Rosary were next up for Abbey but the game was over after six minutes following a defensive horror show from the Rosarians - Abbey were 4 up in that time! Abbey made it five before the break and though Rosary vastly improved in the second stanza, they rarely threatened Abbey's goal, it was merely damage limitation for the Light Blues.
Over at Heathlands, Highfield's no show (due to staffing issues) meant just the one game and SSPP made sure they stayed on course for the play-offs with a comfortable 6-0 win over their hosts.
Abbey assured their season will go into mid-May whilst SSPP will need at least two wins from their final three matches to also extend their season. Abbey's final game of the season is next Thursday and it just happens to be the derby with SSPP. STM also look firm favourites for the play-offs but know two wins from their remaining three games will guarantee them the Premier division title.
