Timbers Fell Corpus to Raise Title Hopes!

By Joe Perkins

Timberley go second; Corpus play-off hopes dashed; Heathlands edge Rosary; Feathers and Highfield share spoils

Timberly moved to within three points of leaders Thornton on Thursday afternoon as the Premier league re-started after the Easter break and in the process, the Timbers put a dent into Corpus Christi’s hopes of a play-off spot. In an exciting fixture, Timberley eventually ran out 2-1 winners.

Just around the corner at the Heathway, Heathlands were welcoming Rosary for a mid-table tussle, but it was fair from a kick about in the park as both teams went toe-to-toe in a very enjoyable fixture. Heathlands had the better of the first half and deservedly led 1-0 at the break following a stunning finish from outside the box which veered beyond the Rosary ‘keeper and into the top corner of the net. The Rosary boys were given metaphorical ‘kick up the backside’ at half-time from their boss Mr P, but it had the desired effect as the second half was a much closer affair. After wasting a great opportunity to level, Rosary’s striker went clean through on goal again, but a superb, last-ditch tackle denied him. Shortly after that, Heathlands doubled their advantage. A smart effort was well parried by Rosary’s keeper, but a Heath attacker was quickest to react and volleyed home from close range. Rosary didn’t give up though and pulled a goal back – a splendid free-kick strike from the edge of the penalty area. And with the last kick of the game, Rosary almost snatched an equaliser, but their striker saw his snap-shot fly the wrong side of the post to give Heathlands the three points in a two-one win.

Only one other game took place in the Premier league on Thursday and that was at Holly Lane, where Featherstone and Highfield played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.
