It was 2016 the last time anyone from The Rosary could say they were top of the league but after the opening day of the new season and one in which they find themselves in La Liga, the Saltleysiders can now make that boast - no matter how short a period of time it may last.
Rosary and Colebourne began proceedings at Castle Vale Stadium as the new season began in gloomy, miserable conditions and until Rosary nicked the lead as half-time approached when a defender prodded home from a corner, the contest was fairly even. Rosary doubled their advantage early on in the second half from the penalty spot and the same player, their central striker struck again to seal a 3-0 win. Colebourne then took on St Bernadette's and it turned into a game that neither side wanted to win. The lead changed times on several occasions until the final whistle resulted in a 3 apiece draw - marvellous entertainment with chances aplenty at either end. St Bernadette's had to pick themselves up to face Rosary but once the Rosarians hit the front early on, the result was never in doubt. Rosary's striker hit four goals with another one from a defender followed by the goal of the game, a controlled side-foot volley hit first time from an outswinging corner. At 3-0 Bernie's saw a penalty strike hit an upright, however Rosary ran out comfortable 6-0 winners.
Across in Erdington, Paget opened their campaign with a 9-1 thrashing of hosts, St Barnabas but were then involved in a far closer contest as they had to share the spoils drawing 3-3 with league returnees, Lyndon Green. Green still had enough in the tank to brush past St Barnabas, 8-0.
So, the 2024-25 season is up and running and low and behold Rosary lead the way in what, however, is merely a fledgling table.
