Reigning champions Short Heath opened the defence of their title with two hard-fought wins over Mapledene and Hillstone and joined early pace-setters, Rosary, on six points.
Heath opened up with a 2-1 victory over their genial hosts, Mapledene and then backed that up with another three points against a well-drilled Hillstone outfit. In the other remaining game at the Arena, ‘dene saw off a, by then, tiring Hillstone side, 4-1.
Over in the Premier division, last season’s runners-up, St Thomas More set their intended stall out for the season with two crushing victories, 10-0 and 10-1 over Lea Forest and Featherstone respectively. Lea Forest concluded the afternoon’s entertainment as they defeated the Feathers by two goals to nil.
Elms Farm’s mini-bus breakdown meant they were unable to make their scheduled games at Timberley which left the home side with just Court Farm to play; the Timbers battled their way to a 2-1 win.
