Powerful Thornton March On!

By Joe Perkins

Thornton storm to peak; STM jump to second; Timbers down Fev; Erd Hall and Rosary net wins.

Thursday evening saw Thornton take a significant stride towards the Premier division title whilst St Thomas More also made their intentions clear with both sides securing maximum points as we head into the final break of the league season.

Thornton made their way over to Holly Lane to take on an Erdington Hall side safely ensconced in mid-table and Colebourne, still without a win this campaign. Though the Thorns were made to work hard they still ran out 3-0 winners and they then backed that up with an emphatic 7-1 win over Colebourne thus, impressively, recording their eighth win out of eight games. The evening’s other fixture saw Erdington Hall defeat a tiring Colebourne, 4-1.

Meanwhile, at Castle Vale Stadium, St Thomas More were flexing their muscles and moved up to second place with two wins out of two against Marsh Hill and Rosary. Marsh Hill’s compact defence made it difficult for Tommy More’s but after missing a plethora of chances and the outside of the same post three times, they eventually ground Hill down and eased to a 6-0 victory.
Rosary were hoping to give STM a sterner test, but a defensive error from a long throw and a goalkeeping mistake gifted Tommy More’s a two-goal start within the opening three minutes. Rosary rallied and missed a great opportunity to pull a goal back before conceding an unfortunate third goal just before the break. The second half was a much closer affair following a Rosary tactical switch, but Tommy More’s kept control of the game and netted a fourth late on to seal their second win of the night.
Rosary and Marsh Hill brought the curtain down on the evening’s events and Rosary, with goals early in then first half and late in the second, claimed the spoils in a keenly contested fixture.

There was one more game this evening and that saw Timberley entertain Featherstone at their Bradley Road home and in another entertaining game, the Timbers came out on top with a 2-0 win.

So, after an exciting evening’s football, Thornton lead the way with a maximum 24 points from the eight games they have played so far and that is five points ahead of St Thomas More who have also played eight times. Having been top before the games today, SS Peter and Paul now sit third, also five points adrift of Thornton. A point further back are Timberley and like those above them, have also played eight. The only side who can realistically make a top three finish is Corpus Christi but though they have two games in hand on the teams ahead of them, they are five points away from Timberley.

The Premier division returns on 20th April and among the fixtures is a potentially pivotal one as SSPP travel to Timberley.
