PAGET TAKE TITLE ON DRAMATIC NIGHT!

By Joe Perkins

P's pip STM in incredible final showdown.

You couldn't have scripted it - the final game of the final round of matches in an enthralling season was to be a title decider with just one point and one goal the difference between Paget and St Thomas More's, but so it was. And Paget were victors.

Going into the last day of the girls league, anyone of five teams could still, realistically, have taken the crown: Paget, STM, Hillstone, SSPP and Short Heath. And so began a thrilling night of football.

STM kicked off proceedings ahead of the rest with them needing to play their game in hand and in a close encounter they just edged out Timberley 1-0 to go top. Let the fireworks begin.

Paget faced St Bernadette's first up had to work hard to earn a 2-0 win; Paget back on top. Short Heath kept their hopes alive with a slender 1-0 win over Court Farm whilst SSPP stayed in the chase, narrowly beating Timberley, 2-1. Hillstone though were stunned by an improving Parkfield side in a 1-0 defeat.

Next round however, Parkfield were second-best losing 3-0 to Paget who remained top - STM kept pace though after a thrilling 3-2 win over SSPP. Short Heath remained in the hunt squeezing past Abbey, 1-0.

With Paget sitting out in the next round of games, STM had the chance go back to the top of the table and though they did just that, the 0-0 draw with Hillstone wasn't overly convincing. Short Heath's hopes were dashed as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Timberley.

SSPP's own hopes were finally extinguished when Short Heath nicked the points in a 1-0 win and with STM sitting out, Paget had the chance to go three points clear of the nearest rivals. However, the P's would be involved in a gargantuan battle against Hillstone, (who themselves could, if results went their way, still take the title) with honours even, 1-1, at full-time.

And so the final showdown - Paget one point clear, knew a draw would be enough for them to be crowned champions, STM quite simply had to win. The game wasn't high on quality but what it lacked in that department it more than made up for in endeavour, commitment and desire. With three minutes remaining, Paget broke the deadlock to screams and shouts of joy. STM responded but just couldn't penetrate a robust Paget back-line. But, with just under a minute remaining, hope sprang eternal for the red and blacks when they found an equaliser to set up the mightiest of frantic endings. Paget though, held on to their point, the one that meant they were champions. And breathe...

It was an incredible end to a fantastic season and it was wonderful to see so many girls playing with so much pride and passion and many with smiles on their faces. Congratulations to Paget, commiserations to STM but a heart hip-hip hooray to all of the teams for making the league so entertaining and enjoyable.

Where next?
