Power League on Thursday evening saw Lyndon Green retain their Year 5 6-a-side title. They won a dramatic penalty shoot-out which followed an end-to-end, pulsating final that had concluded 2-a-piece.
Fifteen teams participated in the tournament and all played their part in a successful evening's football. After thirty matches, countless goals and fast-paced action, the best two sides in the tournament met, in what was to be, a memorable final.
LG and Bernies stormed through their groups into the quarter finals and whilst Bernies had a comfortable passage through to the semis, thumping Colebourne 6-1, LG were involved in a tighter affair against old adversaries, Timberley. The Wensley Roaders narrowly winning 2-1.
So to the semis. Bernies were up against Rosary who, whilst not being at their best, had crept through courtesy of a quarter final penalty shoot-out against Alum Rock rivals, Highfield. In a one-sided game, Bernies triumphed 2-0 and booked a final berth. Similarly, LG had a relatively smooth ride themselves, beating an impressive Audley side who had won all their group games and beat a decent Parkfield side in the quarters. However, LG were too big a hurdle as the 4-0 score-line reflected.
And so to the final. Gripping, enthralling, captivating, breath-taking. LG led twice only to be pegged back on both occasions in rapid-style and LG had their keeper to thank for seeing the game head to a shoot-out after he made a string of fine saves. An exhilarating spot-kick competition ensued and included two 'hit the bar' misses by both sides. Sadly for Bernies their fifth penalty was sent wide and the trophy stayed at Wensley Road.
