Once again, the AVFC Dome was the scene for the latest round of matches in La Liga and this week eight schools made their way to Brookvale as the race for the title and play-offs gather pace.
To add spice to an already enticing evening’s football, all the top six were in action with anyone from leaders Lyndon Green down to fourth placed Mapledene in position to finish the day on top of the pile.
Paget were looking to build on last week’s six-point haul at the same venue and they were firm favourites going into games against the bottom two sides, Colebourne and St Bernadette’s and the P’s would emerge with another maximum winning both games, 5-1; it would be enough to take the P’s to the top of the table.
Paget benefited from pace-setters Lyndon Green’s follies as they lost initially to St Barnabas, 2-1 and then 2-0 to fellow title-hopefuls, Short Heath. Heath had opened up against another title foe in Mapledene and both played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Mapledene then took on an improving St Barnabas side, fresh from that aforementioned defeat of Lyndon Green so it came with a large amount of surprise when a clearly ‘on song’ ‘dene romped to a 7-0 win.
In the evening’s other remaining fixtures, Hillstone kept their outside hopes of a top three finish alive with a 4-0 win over Colebourne, but they were then shut-out by St Bernadette’s in a 0-0 draw.
Paget then lead the way with 22 points from eight games played. Short Heath are three points back in second, also after playing eight times. Lyndon Green drop down to third and have 17 points but have played two games more than Paget and Heath. Mapledene remain in touch with those above them having gained 15 points from eight matches. Hillstone lie fifth on twelve points, also from eight games played. St Barnabas complete the top six as from eight fixtures, they have eleven points.
All eyes now turn to next Tuesday and Castle Vale Stadium with Paget vs Mapledene and St Barnabas vs Short Heath the two stand-out fixtures.
