Heath Hit Top Spot!

By Joe Perkins

Champs win titanic tussle; Rosary suffer double defeat at hands of 'dene and Barnie's.

Rosary's time at La Liga's summit was short-lived (as predicted!) as the Rosarians suffered back-to-back defeats at Mapledene with Short Heath taking their place to give the table a more familiar look.

On a sodden afternoon at then Dene Arena, the hosts opened the afternoon's fayre with a lively, end-to-end encounter with St Barnabas. However, neither side could quite break through to leave both sides having to accept a point each in a 0-0 draw.

St Barnabas, buoyed by their first point of the season then took on the league-leaders, Rosary and Barnie's were quick about their work and went in with a deserved 2-0 half-time lead. Rosary were much improved in the second half and pulled a goal back but as they went in search of an equaliser, they were caught out on the break and fell to a 3-1 loss.

As the rain continued to pour down, the Rosarians had to go again against their hosts and in a repeat of the St Barnabas game, found themselves 2 down at half-time. Mapledene were quicker to the ball and Rosary struggled to get going but they gave themsleves hope with a deflected strike with three minutes to go, only to once fall victim again to a counter-attack which led to a fine finish and give 'dene the points, 3-1.

Over at Holly Lane there was a clash of the titans as two of the fancied favourites for the title locked horns. It was a feisty, rip-snorter-of-a-game with both Short Heath and Lyndon Green going tooth and nail at each other. Green were quick about their work and found themselves two nil up but in this breathless battle, Heath weren’t to be denied, turning the game around to dramatically emerge victorious, 3-2 and in the process resume their place at La Liga's summit. And breathe.

Where next?

Tommy More’s Power On! STM plunder goals; Abbey at the double; Forest oust Heath.
Champions Off to Flier! Heath double up at ‘dene; Tommy More’s fire early warning; Timbers open with win; Forest off the mark.
