On a hugely significant night of La Liga football, Abbey's 1-0 win over Erdington rivals SS P&P not only won local bragging rights, but in this tightest of divisions, took them to the top and opened up a 3 point gap between them and their catholic school 'cousins'. Both Abbey and P&P scored heavy wins over Erdington Hall - 10-0 and 8-2, respectively - but Abbey emerged victorious in the main event and look odds-on favourites now to take the La Liga title.
However, as well as P&P on 19 points are Mapledene and they Sheldon side will have a huge say in the title race. And don't rule out Yardley as, while the Erdington giants locked horns, the Youths were helping them to six points with victories over Brookfields, 4-0, and St Bernadette's 2-0. The latter victory was lamented by Bernies boss Mr M-J who felt that the Youths parking of a double-decker bus in front of their own goal frustrated his side and despite having the vast majority of play and chances, succumbed to Youths' counter-attacking football; Walmsley's Youths are now just 3 points off a play-off spot. In the evening's other game, Bernies eased past Brookfields, 3-0, capping a miserable evening for the Hockley-based school.
Still all to play for in this tightest of tight divisions.
