Erdington Boys Flex Muscles!

By Joe Perkins

P&P and Abbey in show of force.

SS Peter and Paul’s and Abbey both made their intentions clear on Tuesday evening as the Erdington-based sides flexed their collective muscles and set a marker down for the rest of the La Liga.

P&P travelled over to Kitts Green for games against hosts, Lea Forest and St. Bernadette’s and flew back to Erdington with six points. They inflicted a first defeat of the season on Bernies with a 3-1 win and also grabbed the points in a tight game against The Foresters, eventually running out 2-1 winners. Lea Forest and St. Bernadette’s shared an exciting 4-4 draw.

Abbey ventured over to Yardley, and against the home-side – who had a 100% record before start of play – they fell behind to a low strike just after half time. The Erdington team gave debuts to three lads and one of those new stars, bundled home a scrappy corner to equalise. Yardley were then indebted to their ‘keeper who produced a stunning save from a late header to ensure a point for the Youths.

Abbey’s then took on league leaders, Mapledene, and produced a high quality performance as they ran out 4-1 winners. Mapledene, for their part, may point to a couple of unfortunate incidents that affected the game.
In the evening’s other game, The Maples won a tight game against the Youths and had luck on their side when a clearance from Youth’s ‘keeper hit one a Mapledene player and flew into the net. The Youths then went on to twice miss an open goal to level the count. “It’s a cruel game” lamented Youths supremo, Mr Walmsley.

Mapledene still lead the way in the La Liga table but SS P&P are hot on their tails and with two games in hand (next Tuesday vs Waverley and Yardley), P&P will be eyeing top spot before half-term. Bernies and Yardley are also in hot pursuit, as are the impressive Abbey, and with Brookfields showing good early form in their debut season, the La Liga is shaping up nicely as we head for the winter break.
