Bernies and Maples Off To Flyers!

By Joe Perkins

11-goal Bernies lead the way as Maples take maximum points at The Arena.

The opening day of the 2016-17 season saw La Liga big guns, St Bernadette's, fire in 11 goals as they toppled Erdington Hall 4-1, and hosts (and new boys) Waverley, 7-0, in an early flexing of muscles. League debutants, Waverley's baptism of fire concluded with a 3-0 reverse to Erdington Hall.
Over at The Arena, home-boys Mapledene were involved in two titanic tussles as they entertained another new side to the league, Brookfields and the returning Oasis Blakenhale (OB). The Maples opened with a 2-1 win over OB mainly due to a 20-yard 'postage-stamp' free-kick that won a nervy and gritty game. OB and Brookfields were then involved in an end-to-end battle, to-ing and fro-ing from start to finish, eventually resulting in a 2-2 draw. The final game of the evening witnessed a Mapledene missed penalty, a Brookfields scoring penalty and a 'Dene winner, blasted into the roof of the net 3 minutes from time, sending the Sheldon faithful home happy with a 6-point haul.
