Tuesday evening saw the opening round of qualifying for the ESPSFA Trophy at Castle Vale Stadium. Nine schools from La Liga competed in two groups with the top two in each qualifying for the finals night on Wednesday week.
Group A was contested by five schools: Hillstone, Abbey, Corpus Christi, Firs and Colebourne. With both Hillstone and Abbey at full strength, it was no surprise that they were first and second, respectively. Stone won all four of their games, scoring 15 goals without reply, their tightest game their 2-0 victory over Abbey. And that was Abbey's only defeat as they were triumphant in their other three matches.
Group B was made up of Short Heath, St Peter and St Paul, St Bernadette's and St Matthew's. Short Heath were the eventual group winners with seven points from their three games - the only dropped points were in their opening fixture against SSPP. Joining them at CVS for the finals night were St Bernadette's whose surprise 1-0 defeat of SSPP meant that the blue'n'blacks went through at the expense of the black'n'whites.
So, Hillstone, Abbey, Short Heath and St Bernadette's will all return to CVS on Wednesday 13th November where they will be joined by a further six teams all of whom will be determined on Thursday evening when schools from the Premier division meet at CVS.
