Lea Forest secured back-to-back Girls League titles at a sun-soaked Castle Vale Stadium on Wednesday evening and are worthy champions.
Needing just a point from their final game of the season against Timberley, Forest cruised to a 2-0 win and but for Timberley’s outstanding goalkeeper along with shots against crossbar and both posts, it would have been comfortably more. However, a header from a long throw-in and a neat side-footed finish were enough to take the title back to Kitts Green. Forest lost only one game out of fifteen, that, a 1-0 defeat to Short Heath and the only other dropped points came after a 1-1 draw with Colebourne; the girls in red and white stripes amassed 52 goals and conceded only 6 times.
Forest champions then but who will be runners-up? The present incumbents are St Bernadette’s, but they can be caught by both Short Heath and Corpus Christi who both have one game left - both against Rosary. It may well come down to goal difference so Rosary, though third from bottom with just one win all season, will have a big say in who finishes second.
There were a couple of other matches at CVS on Wednesday. Courtesy of a stellar hat-trick from their star striker, defeated The Oval 3-0, whilst Timberley and Colebourne battled out a 1-1 draw.
There was one game in the Premier division on Wednesday evening and that was at Heathlands where Firs, sprung a surprise and severely dented the Heathen's play-off hopes. Firs, who are ending the season on a high, made it four wins from five games with a 2-1 win at the Heath Way.
