The Girls League kicked off at Yardley Fives on Wednesday evening with Group A commencing affairs. The league has reverted back to its former 6-a-side format and though Blakenhale and Colebourne pulled out of opening night, eight other schools were all set to compete with eyes on a top four finish and a slot in the play-off finals night in the spring.
And, to cap a great week for their school, Short Heath's girls matched their league team and sit atop their division. Handed two walkover 4-0 wins over Blakenhale and Colebourne, the Heath girls added a further three wins as they defeated Harper Bell 10-0, The Oval 5-0 and Abbey, 2-1 - the only dropped points were in a 1-1 draw with Paget.
The Oval sit second and along with their given 4-0 wins (Blakenhale and Colebourne), they added victories over Abbey and Firs, 5, and 1 nil respectively to go with a 2-2 draw against Timberley.
Third-placed Timberley also benefited from two walkovers, and allied to that a 4-0 win against Brookfields along with two draws, a goalless one with Firs and the aforementioned one with The Oval; the Timbers only defeat was 2-0, inflicted by Paget.
Brookfields also picked up a walkover win and added two, 4-1 wins over Firs and Paget, to give them nine points - they suffered defeats against Timberley, 4-0 and Abbey, 2-0.
Aside from that Brookfields loss, Paget enjoyed their victories over Timberley and Harper Bell as well as that encouraging 1-1 draw with Short Heath.
Firs, lying sixth, secured their solitary victory by beating Harper Bell 8-0 and their four-point tally was completed by that scoreless tie with Timberley.
So, the girls league is up and running once again and Short Heath have set the standard, but there's still a way to go before the top four is decided - Group A returns in January whilst Group A starts next month.
