HEATH'S GIRLS MAKE IT QUINTET FOR SEASON!

By Joe Perkins

Short Heath domination continues with girls' 6-a-side victory; Elms Farm defeated in exciting final.

Short Heath secured an incredible fifth major trophy of an amazing season as they scooped the girls' 6-a-side cup at a hot and sunny Yardley 5's on Wednesday afternoon.
Ten teams attended and were placed into two groups with the top four-placed teams in either venturing on to the quarter finals.
In Group A, Rosary took top honours winning two and drawing the other two to go through as winners on eight points. Just a point behind were Lea Forest who finished second courtesy of a better goal difference than debutants, Starbank who advanced in third place. The final quarter final berth went to the reigning girls champions, Paget, the P's though fielded a weakened due to the majority of their team being away on residential.
Group B saw Short Heath emerge as winners, with Hillstone a solitary point behind in second. Timberley traveled on as they completed their four group games in third spot whilst Elms Farm, squeezed through in fourth with two points.
On to the quarter finals and after their impressive group stage, Rosary fancied their chances of a semi-final appearance but they were cut down to size by a vastly improved Elms Farm side, 3-1. Hillstone enjoyed a comfortable passage to the last four seeing off Starbank, 3-0. The other two games were decidedly tighter with Short Heath defeating age-old rivals, Paget, 1-0 and Lea Forest edged out Timberley after a lengthy penalty shoot-out following a 0-0 stalemate.
The semi-finals paired Elms Farm with Hillstone and Short Heath with Lea Forest. The former game was a belter as the game flowed from end-to-end with neither side deserving to lose but it was Hillstone who nicked it, 2-1 to make their way to the final. The other semi was as tight as it was dramatic. Forest fortuitously took the lead following an unfortunate rebound off the back-board but Heath pressed on in search of an equaliser and they were rewarded 23 seconds from time to force a penalty shoot-out. And in said shoot-out, Heath won through, 3-2.
The Final
Short Heath 1 - 0 Elms Farm
Both teams roused themselves once more after two hours in the sunshine and both sets of girls produced a superb game full of fast, attacking football. Heath scored early which added to the excitement as Elms Farm battled to find a leveller and Heath had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping Farm out with three excellent saves. Try as they might, Elms Farm just couldn't find that elusive equaliser and it was Short Heath celebrating once again at the final whistle.
Heath's glorious season continues unabated with this cup added to the ESPSFA League, ESPSFA Cup, ESPSFA Trophy and the LA Liga. The sky blues will go in search of an unprecedented sixth trophy next week back at Yardley 5's when the final honour of the season is up for grabs - the Year 4/5 trophy.
