Heathens Seal Play-off Berth!

By Joe Perkins

4-point Heath stay out front and confirm play-off spot; Abbey cling on to third-place hopes; Yardley hold Paget in stormer; Bernie's net third win.

Following a 10-0 win and a 1-1 draw at Castle Vale Stadium on Tuesday evening, Short Heath became the first team to confirm a La Liga play-off spot. Heath top the table having amassed 26 points and as Hillstone and Abbey can only return 23 points, the Heathens are now assured of a top three finish.
Heath began their evening by comfortably negotiating Firs and reached double figures in doing so. Credit to Firs though who continued to plug away despite only having six players due to Eid absences. In their second game at the Vale, Heath took on an Abbey side fresh from a 3-1 win over St Bernadette’s in their opening fixture, and it turned into a thunderous, full-blooded encounter. Abbey went ahead midway through the first half and held out until the break as Heath sought an equaliser. The pace of the game was unrelenting and continued unabated into the second period in which Heath’s persistence paid off and they duly equalised. With time still aplenty for either side to snatch all three points, Heath began to pile on the pressure, but Abbey’s defence stood firm and the two heavyweights had to settle for a point each.
In the evening’s remaining game at the Vale, Firs picked themselves up and took an early lead against St Bernadette’s but three unanswered second half strikes saw the points go to Bernie’s in an entertaining 6-a-side clash.
Over in Yardley, the Youths, with multiple games in hand on the front-runners, faced fellow title chasers, Paget. This was always going to be a close affair and though Yardley lead at the break, Paget were quickly level shortly after and despite both sides going toe-to-toe and fashioning an abundance of chances, neither could find a finishing touch.
So, after another breathless evening, Short Heath are guaranteed a play-off spot and three more points from their final two games, will also see Paget in – mind, one of those games is against Short Heath and that titanic tussle could yet be a title decider. Abbey remain in the mix for what will most likely be the third play-off spot. Yardley are still in the hunt themselves but cannot afford to drop too many more points if they want to see their season extend into June.
