The girls league kicked off in earnest on Wednesday evening at Yardley 5’s with five schools taking part in the new Group format, all vying for the two top spots to take them into March’s finals.
Lyndon Green were unable to attend tonight’s Group A opening but Corpus Christi, Rosary, Short Heath along with league debutants Adderley and Brookvale, ensured there would be no shortage of goals or entertainment.
Short Heath were the stand-out team, winning three of their games and drawing the other, conceding just the one goal as they comfortably topped the group.
It was a close-run thing for the other finals place with just three points separating second and fourth spots and it was one of the newcomers, Adderley, who took that berth - their 3-1 win over Corpus Christi proved pivotal as the Landor Street side finished a solitary point ahead of the team from Lyttleton Road; Rosary finished fourth a further point back with Brookvale in fifth.
So Short Heath and Adderley will make their way to the finals in the spring whilst Corpus, Rosary, Brookvale and Lyndon Green will play further games in ‘plate’ competitions.
Girls league Groups B and C take place later this month.
