Go Go Lyndon Green!

By Joe Perkins

Greens flex muscles at top; Colebourne stun Abbey.

It was yet another breathless evening on Tuesday in La Liga with four of the big-hitters in action and it was Lyndon Green who emerged victorious, five points clear at the top of the table and looking the real deal.

Holly Lane saw Green joined by B26 bedfellows, St Thomas More’s and a Paget side keen to add to the three points gained last time out. The P’s opened up against Thomas More’s and in what was a tough, hard-fought tussle, both sides had to settle for a point each in a 1-1 draw. Tommy’s then went up against a hitherto, unbeaten Lyndon Green and the red and blacks found it difficult to break down a well-drilled Green outfit who though did find the net, twice and in doing so, secured a third win of the season. The Greens, now in ebullient mood, finished the evening off with an impressive 3-1 victory over Paget and took their winning streak to four and their lead at the top to five points.

Meanwhile over in Shard End, Hillstone, Abbey and Colebourne were playing out three astonishing games, the results of which made this author have a double-take and question them such were the disparities. Hillstone began the evening with a right old ding-dong arm-wrestle with Colebourne but won it with a last-gasp strike and for the second week running won a game, 4-3. It is two years since Colebourne’s last league win, so there would have been some trepidation as Abbey took to the field for the second game of the night. However, in a La Liga season which has already thrown up shocks and oddities in results, the Coles defeated their illustrious opponents and recorded a famous 2-1 win. Could Abbey pick themselves up for the final game of an already crazy evening? You bet they could, out-muscling a young Hillstone side (made up entirely of Year 5s) and running riot in an 8-1 win.

And breathe! What a division La Liga is turning into. Yes Lyndon Green look like they’ll be away and gone, but only four points then separate STM in second to Colebourne in eighth - each side has played four times. It’s a pity then that the division takes a break now until March but there will be lots to look forward to and no doubt more unpredictable results and wacky score-lines as the race for the top three turns for home.
