Fired Up Abbey Turn Up Heat!

By Joe Perkins

Abbey ignite title charge; Heathens down Youths; Mead back with bang; Barnie's net win.

After a long winter hiatus, the La Liga division returned on a grey, drizzly afternoon on Tuesday but Abbey illuminated both the night and their season with a magnificent six-point haul which lifts them to third in the table and a solitary point off leaders Short Heath.
It was at Yardley where Abbey doubled-up, firstly defeating Short Heath, 2-0, then winning a tight, gripping affair against Yardley, 1-0. The reigning champions created several chances but failed to take them an in a tight, end to end game, Abbey caught the Youths on the counter and with Yardley’s defenders up the pitch, their ‘keeper came out to try to clear the ball but left an open net and subsequently conceded the only goal of the game. The Youths had opened proceedings against Heath, but didn't get going at all, and the Heathens punished them to run out 3-0 winners.
Over in Erdington, St Barnabas were hosting Harper Bell and Brownmead and it was the latter who left happiest, returning to Shard End with six points following an 8-0 defeat of a Harper Bell side made up of entirely Year 5s, and a much closer 2-1 victory over the hosts. The afternoon's other game saw St Barnabas hit five without reply against Bell's youngsters.
So after all of that frantic action it's Short Heath who lead the way with 16 points from 7 games played, a point ahead of Paget who have a game in hand. Abbey now sit third, also on 15 points, but have played two games more than Paget. Yardley’s hopes of retaining their crown took a denting and they know that if they are to challenge again this term, they can’t afford any more slip ups. Brownmead’s two wins takes them to 7 points, just a single point behind the Youths, but they have only played four times so far this season and will surely throw their hat into what will be a very congested ring over the next few weeks.
