Paget nab title as Heath and Youths falter

Paget Primary snatched the La Liga title out of the clutches of both Short Heath’s and Yardley’s hands on Tuesday evening after their two wins at Castle Vale Stadium and Yardley’s failure to beat Brownmead at Harvey Road.
It wasn’t going to be anything else but passionate, exciting and completely exhilarating as Paget and Short Heath went toe-to-toe, in which, once the dust had settled on a tumultuous night in La Liga, the game became a title decider. It was a clash of high energy from start to finish with both sides creating number of chances. Short heath finished the opening half the stronger and probably should have gone to the break ahead. Paget, noting the danger signs, moved into a higher gear after the interval and they were rewarded mid-way through the half after. A driven effort was parried away by Heath’s ‘keeper but the rebound found the open net: 1-0 Paget. Calm heads were needed as tension rose and a stretched game sped from end to end but neither side could capitalise and Paget managed to hold on and in turn set up a potential title winner against Colebourne. And Paget were in no mood to cede any ground as they brushed aside a competitive Colebourne side, 5-0. The Coles’ heads never dropped though and despite a Paget onslaught, they and their inspiring young ‘keeper, did themselves and their school proud.
Over at Yardley, the Youths were looking for two wins that would place the title in their own hands. And the Youths began with a bang, as their striker had his shooting boots firmly on and his hat-trick contributed towards a 5-0 win. Round two saw the Youths face a resurgent and far more robust, Brownmead side and the Youths found the Pencroft Roaders a vet different proposition. Though ‘mead offered little in attack, they had their moments, mostly ariel, but Yardley contained them and the first half ended goalless. The second stanza saw Yardley create plenty of chances, but frustratingly for boss, Mr Walmsley, his charges watched their efforts go marginally wide or fly straight at ‘mead’s keeper.
So, after all of that madness, congratulations to Paget and commiserations to Short Heath who though, will undoubtedly come roaring back in the play-offs. To see who joins Heath and Paget in those June play-offs, we must await the outcome of Yardley’s fixtures next week against Featherstone, on Monday, and Hillstone, on Thursday as Abbey, Hillstone and Featherstone can all still, mathematically, make it.
