On a blisteringly hot afternoon, six teams took to the pitches at Yardley 5's to contest the annual Year 5 six-a-side tournament on Wednesday afternoon and it would be Short Heath who would leave with the broadest smiles as they regained the crown they lost to Mapledene a year ago.
The tournament was played on a league format with each school playing each other and the two favourites, Short Heath and Abbey locked horns in the opening round of matches. Not that anyone knew at the time due to the tremendous amount of talent on show, but Heath's opening 4-3 humdinger-of-a-win over Abbey, would prove crucial as those three points would make the difference between the two at the conclusion of a terrifically contested tournament.
And also in those first three games, both Hillstone and Timberley made their intentions clear with wins over SSPP and Rosary, respectively.
Heath then continued on with a comfortable 2-0 win over Rosary, whilst Abbey saw off a hard-working SSPP side, 2-1 and Hillstone maintained their 100% start with a narrow 1-0 win over Timberley.
Round three saw Short Heath ease to a 5-0 win against SSPP as Hillstone won for a third time, seeing off Rosary 2-0; Abbey though lost further ground after a 1-1 draw with Timberley.
Hillstone's winning run was abruptly ended by Short Heath in the fourth and penultimate set of fixtures as the Heathens eased to a 4-0 win. Abbey got back on track with a 5-2 triumph over Rosary whilst Timberley beat SSPP by the same score.
And so to the final round of games and despite Abbey putting six goals past Hillstone, a 2-2 draw with Timberley was more than enough for Short Heath to capture they won two years ago when, incidentally, Abbey were runners-up once again. And just to finish off, SSPP won the basement battle with a tired Rosary, 4-1.
So, congratulations to Short Heath, worthy winners and commiserations to Abbey who couldn't quite add the Y5 Trophy to the Year 3/4 one won a few weeks ago. Credit though goes to all of the schools whose boys all played the games in great spirit and enjoyed the contest despite the searing heat.
