St Barnabas caused a major upset at their Spring Lane home on Thursday evening as they defeated both title-hopefuls, Lyndon Green and play-offs aspirants, Paget. And in doing so, Barnie’s threw themselves right into the play-off mix as the season enters its home straight.
St Barnabas began proceedings by entertaining a Paget side who needed maximum points from Spring Lane to ignite a play-off charge, but it was the former who would emerge victorious following a frenetic, five-goal thriller.
Paget then had to pick themselves up to face Lyndon Green and in a much tighter, cagier affair the South Yardley side netted the only goal of the game to give themselves a shot at top spot in the final game of the day vs the hosts.
But, for the second time of the evening, St Barnabas upset the applecart and were stoic and defiant in a 1-0 win thus denying Green top billing and giving their own play-off chances a real boost.
So, at the end of a thrilling week of fixtures in La Liga, it is Abbey who lead the way with their play-off berth guaranteed. Lyndon Green lie second, just a point behind whilst Short Heath are a further two back in third – all three have played six times. St Barnabas though now sit ominously in fourth place and are only one pint away from Heath plus Barnie’s have a game in hand. And for the first time in living memory, reigning champions, Paget, won’t be involved in the end of season play-offs as they have six points from six games and with only two left, they cannot mathematically make them.
