Burning Bernie's Blast to Top!

Bernie's lay down title marker; Heathens keep pace; Corpus suffer first defeat.

After the last two girls league outings were played in sub-zero temperatures, it was with great delight that on Wednesday evening the latest round of fixtures took place under a booming yellow sun and a deep sky of blue. And it was St Bernadette's who also shone brightly at the Castle Vale Stadium as they headed back to Hobmoor Road still unbeaten and as league leaders.
Bernie's won two and drew two of their four games played and were also buoyed (as were Blakenhale, Hillstone and St Matthew's) by Brookfields being unable to play so giving them a 4-0 win. Their biggest scalp of the evening being a 2-0 defeat of previously unbeaten Corpus Christi; Bernie's remain unbeaten in their nine games played so far.
Short Heath also remain unbeaten. The Heathens enjoyed 3-0 and 1-0 victories over St Matthew's and Hillstone respectively and allied those six points with two more following battling 0-0 draws with both Bernie's and Corpus.
The St Bernadette's defeat was Corpus Christi's first of the season but they did manage to secure three victories. Both St Matthew's and Timberley suffered 1-0 defeats at the hands of the Stechford-based side with Erdington Hall felled 3-0.
Erdington Hall however won both of their other games as they downed both Hillstone and Timberley, 1-0. There were wins too for Blakenhale (over Harper Bell, 1-0), Hillstone (2-1, also over Harper Bell) and St Matthew's (1-0 against Erdington Hall). Harper Bell and Timberley were the only teams to not register three points and when the two met, they played out a goal-less draw.
So Bernie's lead the way now on 23 points, the same as Short Heath, but have a nine-goal superior goal difference; Bernie's also have two games in hand over the Heathens.Corpus Christi are up to fifth place on 19 points but they have a game in hand on the leaders. And with Lea Forest in third on 21 points and Abbey in fourth on 20 - and with both having a played a game less than St Bernadette's - all eyes will turn to the next set of fixtures on March 27th which will be released tomorrow evening.
A thrilling end to the girls league season is guaranteed!
