ABBEY SNATCH YR3/4 TITLE AT DEATH!

By Joe Perkins

Final game showdown sees Abbey lift crown; Bernie’s and Short Heath pipped in frantic finale.

Abbey emerged victorious from Yardley 5s on Monday night to lift the inaugural Year 3/4 League Championship and did it courtesy of a better goal difference than St Bernadette’s and Short Heath.
Going into the final round of matches, it was going to be a three-horse race for the title with Abbey leading the way on goal difference, four better than Bernie’s in second and five from Short Heath.
With Lyndon Green unable attend, both Abbey and Short Heath were awarded 4-0 wins, Abbey then beat Rosary, 2-0, whilst Short Heath enjoyed victories over St Thomas More’s, 3-1, and then old foes, Paget, 3-2. St Bernadette’s meanwhile came from a goal down to see off Rosary 3-1 and then narrowly edged out Hillstone, 2-1.
It all meant that going into the final games of the evening and the league itself, St Bernadette’s sat top on 18 points, ahead of Short Heath in second, by virtue of a better goal difference and lo and behold, one of those last fixtures was St Bernadette’s vs third-placed Abbey. A point would have been enough for Bernie’s to take the crown but Abbey stormed to a 4-0 win and in doing so jumped from third to first place, gazumping their opponents to lift the trophy. With that defeat Bernie’s had to settle for runners-up but even that was tight as they finished there by having scored one more goal than Short Heath.
So congratulations to Abbey on winning the first Year 3/4 League and in such dramatic circumstances. It was a fitting end to what was a successful and exciting league and hopefully on the back of such an exciting competition, a bigger more expansive league for the 8 and 9 year olds across the ESPSFA will ensue next season.

Where next?

Paget March on but Heath Hot on Heels! Paget maintain unbeaten record; Heath stay in touch; Lyn Green net dozen.
Timbers Chop Down Forest! Timberley go joint top with win.
