Tuesday afternoon saw Abbey take on Ward End over at Hollyfields knowing that a win virtually guarantees them at least second place in the division whilst also retaining their, slight, hopes of the divisional title. The reigning champions were rarely threatened by a hard-working Ward End and secured a routine 3-0 win. Abbey are now just the one point behind front-runners, Hillstone, but the Shard End outfit have three games left apposed to Abbey’s one.
The race for the third and final play-off spot in La Liga, intensified though with SSPP, St Bernadette’s and Rosary all winning games and leaving us none the wiser as to who will grab that elusive berth.
Blakenhale hosted St Bernadette’s and Rosary with ‘hale looking to throw a spanner or two into their respective rivals play-off ambitions. The home side opened against St Bernadette’s and a hugely enjoyable encounter witnessed seven goals, including one direct from Bernies’ ‘keeper and an instant reply from the kick-off via a well hit strike from inside ‘hale’s own half. Bernie’s however managed to edge out their persistent hosts, 4-3. St Bernadette’s then took on Rosary in a game both needed to win but at the same time, not dare lose. Rosary found Bernie’s ‘keeper in imperious form making vital saves and crucial blocks to keep the Saltleysiders at bay. Rosary though did take the lead but were pegged back following a deflected strike, and with Bernie’s long throws causing mayhem in their box they had to survive a scare or two before the final ended a terrific 1-1 draw. Blakenhale then concluded the evening against Rosary whose pace up front was a real problem all game and the Rosarians ran out comfortable 4-1 winners – their final goal a real beauty which brought applause from all around.
Across at Waverley, SSPP were keeping their play-off hopes alive, seeing off their gallant hosts, 6-1. SSPP’s quality shone through throughout the 25 minutes, but full credit to Waverley for not giving in despite the barrage released by the black ‘n’ whites.
So, the tussle for third is as fascinating as it is exciting. SSPP currently lie third on 28 points from 14 games played and just a solitary point ahead of Yardley and Rosary, both of whom have two games left play including one against each other next week. St Bernadette’s sit another point back but have three games left and a potentially pivotal one with SSPP – Bernie’s also have to play the league leaders, Hillstone. Bored? You won’t be!
