Abbey's 3s and 4s rode off with the ESPSFA Year 3/4 6-a-side trophy on Wednesday evening. In a hard-fought final, the Erdington youngsters defeated Yardley's Youths by 3 goals to 1. The Youths never fully recovered from conceding 2 own goals in the space of 45 seconds midway through the first half, and though they had the majority of play in the second stanza, only once could they pierce a determined Abbey rearguard.
Abbey advanced to the final in fine style, hitting much-fancied Audley B for 6 in a one-sided semi-final having taken care of Lea Forest in the quarters, 3-0.
Yardley cruised through the group stages then, in a tight 1/4 final, drew 0-0 with St Bernadette's. The Youths eventually nudged past Bernies on penalties before taking on a skillful Timberley outfit and The Youths cut The Timbers down with a 2-0 semi-final win.
The group stages of the tournament saw goals aplenty, games played in fantastic spirit and all the children having a great time playing the beautiful game. Over to the girls now next week!
