SUPER STONE LA LIGA CHAMPS!

By Joe Perkins

Hillstone take title in style; SSPP and Bernie's wounded in play-off battle; Timbers down Wavers.

A resounding 6-0 win at their home base in Shard End on Tuesday afternoon not only gave Hillstone their 13th win of the season and their 60th goal, but a first La Liga title to boot – and with still two games still to play. The Stones will make formidable opponents in the end of season play-offs to secure the overall ESPSFA Champions, next month.
Stone are worthy divisional champions and their remarkable season continued a pace, with the latest victims being St Bernadette’s who went into the game with their sights set on the third play-off spot. However, Hillstone were in no mood for benevolence and swiftly dispatched their visitors with six, unanswered goals. Though the Stones have two games still to play to conclude their campaign, they now cannot be caught as Abbey, the reigning champions, in second, are four points adrift and have only one more game to play; Abbey are assured of the runners-up spot though.
In the other game at Hillstone on Tuesday, St Bernadette’s had to pick themselves back up and go again, this time against SS Peter and Paul – a crucial game in the battle for third place. This was SSPP’s last game of the season and were desperate to get the three points in the bag and post a ‘come and get us’ total. To have any realistic chance of making third, Bernie’s also needed maximum points and in light of that, the game was far tighter and competitive than the opener at Hillstone. Both sides created enough chances to win the spoils but in the end. with little between the two, they had to settle for a battling 1-1 draw.
The race for third is quite intriguing. The advantage now lies with Rosary and Yardley who have two games left to play and could get to 33 points, more than enough for the third play-off spot. However, the two clash at Yardley this Thursday and something must give - all eyes will be on Harvey Road with SSPP and Bernie’s hoping for a repeat of their result this evening in order to keep their play-off hopes alive. A win for either Yardley or Rosary will put them in the driving seat to continue their season into June.
There was one other fixture on Tuesday in La Liga. Timberley ventured across to Waverley and were too strong for their hosts running out comfortable 4-0 winners.
