Slick Stone Start in Style!

By Joe Perkins

La Liga champs lay down early marker; Heathens hit Coles for 6; Marg Mary's 6-goal salvo.

Finally, after two weeks of wash-outs, football returned to La Liga on Tuesday afternoon with reigning La Liga champions, Hillstone entertaining Short Heath and Colebourne at their Shard End home. And 'stone would end the evening with a maximum six points, issuing a statement of intent as they kicked-off their 2019-20 campaign in slick style.

However, in Short Heath, Hillstone faced a difficult opponent and though they ran out 5-1 winners, they were helped by Short Heath errors. Stone were in no mood to look those gift-horses in the eye, and ruthlessly, duly punished their erstwhile guests. Then against Colebourne, 'stone switched to cruise control and giving a couple of squad players a run out, eased to a 3-0 win.
Short Heath though did manage to put that defeat behind them and sauntered to a 6-0 victory over a tired Colebourne, whose luck on the night was clearly out.

Over at St Matthew's, the home team, under new management, were making their bow this season along with visitors, St Margaret Mary. The Erdington side are a dark-horse for honours this term and began with a fine 6-0 victory.

Despite three weeks of the season having passed, the La Liga table still has an embryonic look about it with eight teams yet to kick a ball in earnest, nevertheless it has a familiar look with Hillstone sitting on top. Stone lead ahead of Blakenhale and Yardley, courtesy of a two-goal better goal difference. Four teams, StMM, Short Heath, SSPP and Firs each have three points and are separated by goal difference. Colebourne have managed to play four times but have nothing to show for their endeavours - happier times, hopefully, will soon arrive for the Hodge Hill outfit.
