The curtain came down on another ESPSFA season at GOALS, Star City on Tuesday with Lyndon Green exiting the stage with the coveted cup and, in doing so, secured a third ESPSFA League and Cup double.
The 6-a-side tournament saw a record 20 teams competing in 4 groups of 5 and with only the top 2 in each progressing to the 1/4 finals, it led to an evening of exciting and pulsating action.
Games and goals came thick and fast and in Group A Lyndon Green - despite not playing to their usual high standard - progressed as winners with Abbey just pipping an impressive Heathlands side in to second spot. Group B saw Rosary win through and they were accompanied by a lively Lea Forest. Parkfield reigned in Group C and were joined in the quarters by runners-up St Bernadette's. Arguably the toughest group was Group D. With three teams tied on 9 points, it was Highfield that came out on top on goal difference with Brookfields second, ahead of Timberley by just a couple of goals.
The quarter finals themselves saw Lyndon surpass a determined Brookfields outfit and league runners-up, Rosary, coming from a goal down to knock out Blakesley Hall. Highfield overcame Abbey 2-0 to earn themselves a semi-final berth and to complete the last four line up, Parkfield edged Lea Forest courtesy of a penalty shoot-out.
The semi finals saw league champions Lyndon Green face Parkfield and with their 'A' game almost fully restored, The Greens won a final spot thanks to a 2-0 win. The other semi was a much tighter affair with Rosary and Highfield duelling in a pulsating Alum Rock derby which, after a 1-1 draw, saw Highfield reach the final after a brief sudden-death penalty shoot-out.
And so to the final... With The Greens now nearing peak performance, an emotionally-drained Highfield side were defeated by 3 goals to 1 and the Cup was on its way back to Wensley Road.
Another season another LG double. Who's going to stop them next season?
