Girls League Kicks-Off!

By Joe Perkins

Erd Hall and Short Heath lead way on opening day.

Another sunny afternoon for the ESPSFA as the Girls League got underway at a new venue for us, the very trim Castle Vale Stadium. Four schools were in attendance to do battle on a pristine 3G playing surface: Brookfields, Erdington Hall, Harper Bell and Short Heath.
It was the sides from the Erdington end of town who left with honours even, seven points each in the bag and only separated by a one-goal difference at the top of a fledgling league table.
Short Heath opened up with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Harper Bell. It should have been more comfortable for the Heathens as they missed chance upon chance and struck both bar and post which led to a frustrating 15 minutes for boss, Mr James. Erdington Hall's two first half goals were enough to beat Brookfields before they became embroiled in an eight-goal thriller with Harper Bell. Though Hall ran out 5-3 winners, the score could easily have been 9-6 such was the frenzied nature of the game. Meanwhile, Short Heath were quietly going about their business as they defeated Brookfields, 2-0.
With Brookfields having to depart early, Harper Bell were granted 4-0 walkover which left just an Erdington Hall v Short Heath joust in the evening's final game. Though Short Heath had the lion's share of possession, they struggled to break down a tough Erdington back-line. However, eventually they did with a beautifully struck effort that flew into the top corner of the net. The Heathens couldn't hold on to their slender advantage though and Hall smashed in an equaliser midway through the second half. Neither side could manage a further breakthrough and the game ended in an honourable 1-1 draw.
Girls league is up and running and convenes again on 14th November at the CVS - this time under the lights.
