Girls League Excites as Heathens go Top!

By Joe Perkins

Heathens lead way but Coles, Abbey, Forest and 'field keep tabs; Brookfields finally find net.

Castle Vale Stadium on Wednesday night saw the rain subside to leave mild conditions for the latest round of fixtures in the girls league and there were thrills and spills aplenty between the eight schools involved.
Short Heath now head the table after securing eight points from two wins and two draws. The Heathens battled to 1-0 victories over Parkfield and Lea Forest, but were held 0-0 in their opening game by Colebourne, and were later left frustrated after missing a hat-full of chances in a 1-1 draw with Abbey.
Colebourne enjoyed a great start to their season as they followed up their point against Short Heath with three consecutive 1-0 wins over Brookfields, Erdington Hall and Harper Bell. The nine points accumulated takes them second, five points behind the Heathens but having played three games less.
Lea Forest also began their campaign with three wins, as they downed Brookfields, 1-0, Harper Bell, 2-0 and Erd Hall, 4-0; Forest go fourth as a result.
Parkfield had a very similar night to Forest as they too had three wins and a defeat. Field lie fifth in the league, behind Forest by just the one goal difference. The Alum Rockers secured a 3-0 victory against Erd Hall and despite the aforementioned loss to Short Heath, went on to beat Harper Bell 1-0 and Brookfields, 2-0.
Immediately behind Parkfield sit Abbey whose two wins and two draws, gives them an opening night eight-point total: their victories came against Harper Bell, 2-0, and Erd Hall 4-0 and were allied with 1-1 ties against Short Heath and Brookfields - that Brookfields strike was their first goal in seven games and was richly deserved for their continued efforts.
The girls league takes a break now until late January when hopefully we'll have another entertaining evening.
