Green Set Pace on Bonkers Opening Day!

What a start to the new ESPSFA season and La Liga division which saw two 7-0s, three 2-1s and a 1-0, ending with Lyndon Green top of the pile three points clear of Short Heath, Abbey, Paget and St Barnabas.

The La Liga division’s four fancied teams for the title were all in action: Short Heath, Abbey and Paget all met at Holly Lane whilst Lyndon Green were joined by Colebourne and St Barnabas at Barnie’s home Spring Lane ground.

And it was Lyndon Green who laid down an early marker as they swept aside Colebourne, 7-0 as well as defeating their hosts, St Barnabas, 1-0. Colebourne put up a much better fight in their other game at Spring Lane but St Barnabas pipped them to the three points with a narrow 2-1 win.

Meanwhile just down the road at Holly Lane, three heavyweights were meeting in what turned about to be a bizarre and remarkable set of games and results. The two old foes, Paget and Short Heath opened proceedings and though Paget took the honours in a 2-1 win, they had their goalkeeper to thank as he pulled off a series of outstanding saves. Heath then took on an Abbey side who are expected to be very much in the mix for major honours this season, but in a rather astonishing game, Heath put Abbey to the sword in a 7-0 rout. Come the final game then we’re all expecting a Paget win but no, Abbey beat the P’s, 2-1. Work them results out if you can!

So, we’re off to a brilliant and somewhat whacky start to the La Liga campaign but if games and results continue in such chaotic fashion, there won’t be too many complaints - not from the neutrals anyway.
