Short Heath Take Group A Title!

By Joe Perkins

Heathens storm to crown; Coles fire into play-off mix; Brookfields hone in on top four finish.

Wednesday evening at Yardley Fives saw the latest round of matches in Girls League Group A and with three more wins from three more games, Short Heath's girls have already sealed the divisional title. The Heathens sit atop the table with an unassailable 25 points having scored 36 goals along the way and conceding only 5 in a remarkable run of games - they are also the first side in 2020 to taste silverware. Heath were once again impressive in 3-1 wins over Brookfields and Firs and in a 4-1 victory against league newcomers, Featherstone.
Colebourne also enjoyed a 100% record on the night winning all four of their games and scoring 18 goals along the way. The Coles are firmly in the play-off reckoning and so are Brookfields who are up to second in the table. The Hockley-based outfit shrugged off their opening night defeat to Short Heath to win back-to-back games against Harper Bell (3-0) and The Oval (1-0). Fields looked set for 3 consecutive victories but were denied by a late, late Blakenhale goal in a 2-2 draw.
Paget endured a mixed evening after a win, a draw and two defeats which leaves them right on the play-off precipice. Also dangling with them are Abbey, Firs and Blakenhale - all three of those schools had joys and sorrows on the night but can still progress to the play-offs.
Featherstone - who only began their campaign this evening - have six more games to play and they will take comfort from wins over Abbey and Harper Bell as they too harbour top four ambitions.
The only team who mathematically cannot proceed to the play-offs are Harper Bell, though they at least left Yardley with a point after they held The Oval, 1-1.
All will be decided when the final round of fixtures takes place in March and the only side to not to feature in Wednesday night's games, Timberley, know that three wins from their final four games will guarantee them a place in May's finals.
