Youths Storm into Y5 Finals!

Bernie's, Short Heath and Audley B also through; surprise as Abbey bow out.

The sun blazed down at Power League, Yardley on Tuesday evening as La Liga qualifying took place for the ESPSFA Year 5 six-a-side tournament. An Audley side were joined by teams from Short Heath, Abbey, Timberley and Maryvale in group A, whilst Yardley, St Bernadette’s and two further Audley sides, made up group B.
In group A, Short Heath’s 4-2 win over Abbey proved pivotal and helped secure them a passage to the finals on 4th July. The Heathens had shared 4 goals in their group opener with Audley B but victories over Timberley and Maryvale combined with the defeat of Abbey to send them through in top spot.
Audley B began with two draws, their second, against Abbey, was then followed by wins over Maryvale and Timberley, with the eight points accumulated taking them into the finals in second spot. Abbey, surprisingly, finished third with Timberley and Maryvale joint fourth – credit to both of those sides for never giving up and also for providing terrific entertainment in their 3-3 draw.
Group B was much more clear cut. Yardley’s Youths romped to the finals in first place with three wins out of three, bagging a hatful of goals along the way. Their 5-0 win against St Bernadette’s was the group decider, with Bernies then defeating both Audley A and Audley C comfortably to qualify second.
Thursday sees the turn of the Premier league sides’ qualifiers, also at Power League, Yardley, and we will see who will join Short Heath, the Youths, Bernie’s and Audley in the finals next week.
