Stone and SSPP Storm to Trophy Finals!

By Joe Perkins

Audley and Timberley also into finals.

Castle Vale Stadium on Wednesday evening saw the second qualifying round of the ESPSFA Trophy. Four places were up for grabs from the two groups of five teams and after an hour or so’s football in blustery conditions it was Hillstone, Timberley, SSPP and Audley who join Short Heath, Abbey, Corpus Christi and Blakenhale on finals night on 12th December.
Group A saw La Liga league leaders win three of their four games, scoring nine goals along the way. Those wins, tallied with an entertaining 1-1 draw with eventual group runners-up, Timberley; the Timbers secured themselves a finals berth courtesy of two wins and two draws. Heathlands played some nice football in finishing third in the group, whilst Colebourne, and a young Harper Bell side, were rewarded with just two draws and one draw respectively for their efforts.
Group B had a similar look to it and it was ESPSFA Cup holders, SS Peter & Paul who were the dominant force as they, like Hillstone in Group A, netted ten points as group victors. The only points dropped were in a 0-0 draw with the group’s runners-up, Audley; the Glebesiders eight points enough for them to book a finals night spot. Lea Forest couldn’t quite reciprocate their league form up to the winter break and finished third. Both Brookfields and Gossey Lane failed to find the net but were unlucky not to have more to show for their endeavours.
