Ominous Youths Send Title Message!

By Joe Perkins

6-point Yardley fire warning; Bernie's suffer first loss; Matt's, Timbers and 'hale net wins; Nansen go nap at Waverley.

Tuesday evening saw Yardley Youths pick up another two wins and though they lie in sixth place in the table, they are only four points off second placed Rosary. The Youths have two games in hand on the Rosarians and also, still feel they will have a major say in the divisional title race.
Gunter and St Bernadette's were the visitors to Yardley's Harvey Road ground and it was Bernie's who began proceedings against the hosts. Bernie's went into the game unbeaten after winning their first two games of the season, but found it tough going against a well organised Youths side. Yardley made the most of their chances and emerged 3-1 victors. St Bernadette's then took on Gunter who were still searching for their first win and it was the Hobmoor Road outfit who finally found their shooting boots as they ran out 6-1 winners. Gunter had to then pick themselves up and take on a Yardley side buoyed by their earlier 3-1 win. Though the Youths won by six goals to nil, Gunter never once let their heads drop and continued to battle away. Once again Gunter were a credit to their school, to their staff and parents and to the league and deserve special praise for their concerted efforts.
Over In Nechells, St Matthew's, Blakenhale and Timberley were squabbling away and once the dust had settled, they each had a win apiece: St Matt's beat Timberley (3-0) who beat Blakenhale (3-1) who beat St Matt's (4-2); go figure (as the Americans say).
One final game to report on - the Waverley Nansen clash at Waverley. Both sides went into the game looking for a hitherto, elusive first victory, and it was the Alum Rock side who took the honours as they recorded a fine 5-1 win.
