HAPPY ABBEY ESPSFA CHAMPIONS!

By Joe Perkins

Abbey defeat local rivals in play-off final to take League Title. SS P&P fall at final hurdle.

Abbey are the 2016-17 ESPSFA League Champions! The Erdington-based side beat SS Peter and Paul by two goals to nil in the league play-off final to write a new name on the prestigious trophy.
In a closely contested game, in which both sides playing some tremendous football, it was Abbey who emerged victorious with goals either side of the break and those strikes secured the ESPSFA title, which will now sit alongside their regular season, 'La Liga' triumph.
At a sunny Brownmead, the play-offs afternoon began with two pulsating semi-finals: Brownmead - Premier League winners - took on SS Peter and Paul's, with La Liga champs Abbey, facing Harper Bell.
Brownmead were desperately unlucky to go down 2-1, chances came and went at both ends, but a second-half winner for the side in black-and-white, meant that P&P snatched themselves a final berth.
Whilst their Erdington rivals were scrapping away, Abbey's power was proving too much for Harper Bell as they ran out 4-2 winners. Bell, however, missed a number of opportunities and they proved costly with Abbey lethal at the other end.
While the aforementioned final was taking place, Harper Bell took on Brownmead in a 3rd/4th placed tie. In another free-flowing game it was Bell who took their chances in a 4-0 win over a dispirited Mead who had put so much into their earlier semi-final.
And so the curtain comes down on another ESPSFA league season. Well done to Abbey, commiserations to SS P&P, Harper Bell and Brownmead.
In two week's time, Abbey will go in search of a league and cup double when they vie for the ESPSFA Cup at GOALS, Star City. Who's gonna stop 'em?
