Forest Fire to Summit!

By Joe Perkins

Foresters, Abbey and Bernie's win all 4 games on freezing evening at the CVS.

As the girls from the ten competing schools in the latest round of league fixtures left Castle Vale Stadium on Wednesday evening with teeth chattering and bodies shivering, it was Lea Forest, Abbey and St Bernadette's who left the heartier after all three schools secured four wins from their respected four games.
The first set of matches began as the low winter sun set beyond the adjacent M6 motorway and as it did, Abbey raced to a 4-0 win over Hillstone whilst St Bernadette's won comfortably, 2-0 against Rosary. Blakenhale opened up with a narrow 2-1 win over The Oval as Parkfield and Timberley played out a goalless draw.
Lea Forest's first sortee of the evening saw them waltz to a 7-0 victory over a statuesque Rosary. Bernie's continued their good form winning 3-0 against Parkfield while Abbey eased to a 2-0 win over Blakenhale. Colebourne completed the round with a tight 1-0 win over a battling Hillstone side.
The Forest then put Parkfield to the sword and netted five times without reply, scoring a couple of excellent team goals on the way. There were 3-0 wins for Abbey and Bernie's over The Oval and Colebourne, respectively as Hillstone and Timberley's Shard End derby failed to trouble to score-board.
Blakenhale were next to suffer at the Forester's hands (or feet!) as the girls from Ridpool Road cruised to another big win: 6-0 this time. Bernie's had another 2-0 victory, this time over Timberley. The Timbers lamenting their missing star player, away on a residential. Colebourne downed the hapless Rosary by the same score-line and there was finally some joy for Hillstone as they won an entertaining encounter with The Oval, 4-1.
The final set of fixtures saw Forest win their Kitts Green derby with The Oval, 4-1, Abbey defeat Colebourne, 1-0, Blakenhale squeeze past Timberley, 1-0, and Rosary finally having something to sing about on the mini-bus back to Alum Rock as they secured a 2-0 derby win over neighbours, Parkfield.
Tonight's results mean that after their eight games, Lea Forest sit atop the table on 21 points, but are just a single point ahead of Abbey in second place and 5 clear of Colebourne in third. St Bernadette's lie a further 9 points back but they have only played 4 games - the 4 they played tonight and the 4 they subsequently won. They will look to close the gap next time out when girls league meets again at the end of February.
Finally, full credit to all the girls who played on a bitingly cold evening giving their all and representing their schools with pride and passion.
