Youths Leap to Top!

Youths, Abbey and Bernies fire 6 point salvos; Heathens hit Matt's for 6; tough evening for Nechells, Cromwell and Waverley; Ward End grab win.

Tuesday evening saw Yardley, Abbey and St Bernadette’s all make substantial moves in the La Liga table as the race for its title, and a top two play-off spot, intensified. In a wonderfully concertinaed top six, only 11 points separate Hillstone (with two games in hand) and new leaders, Yardley.

The Youths made light work of a young and raw Cromwell side, 11-0 and defeated a determined Ward End outfit 4-0 to take top spot from long-time leaders SS Peter & Paul, albeit by just a single point. In the evening’s other game at Yardley, Ward End beat Cromwell in a much closer encounter, 1-0.

Meanwhile, over in Bordesley, Waverley were hosting four games on their two pitches. Amongst the throng were reigning champions, Abbey, and the Erdington-based side helped themselves to six points with victories over Waverley, 6-0, and EACT Nechells, 3-0. Also in attendance at Waverley were St Bernadette’s, who have suddenly hit top form. The Hobmoor Roaders are gathering momentum following back-to-back 4-0 and 7-0 wins over Nechells and the hosts, respectively. Full credit goes out to both Waverley and Nechells for giving spirited displays against two of the league’s forerunners.

La Liga’s other fixture on Tuesday, played at a sunny St Matthew’s, saw the home side entertain a Short Heath side keen to make advances towards the top six. Matt’s worked tremendously hard throughout but lacked a cutting edge up front and were undone by the Heathens swift, free-flowing attacks which in the end led to a 6-0 win. The Heathens, desperate to keep a clean-sheet, had their ‘keeper to thank for doing so as he expertly kept out a stinging Matt’s free-kick in the game’s final act.

Yardley then lead the way on 31 points from 12 games, a point ahead of P&P, who have also played 12. Abbey remain in third place, level on points with their Erdington counterparts, but with a game in hand. And next Tuesday the two meet at Hollyfields. St Bernadette’s are a further four points back, but their current form makes them a lurking, dangerous animal, and they are sure to have a big say in things. Audley in fifth place probably have too much to do to make an impact but Hillstone, with those two, aforementioned games in hand, could very well do so.
