Audley Blow Title Race Wide Open!

By Joe Perkins

Audley dent P&P title surge; Timbers also hold leaders; Abbey oust Yardley to close in on rivals.

A dramatic evening’s football on Tuesday ended with SSP&P’s 100% record gone and a giant spanner put in the La Liga title race. Abbey cashed in on their Erdington rival's travails and narrowed the gap between first and second to two points – notably, Abbey have a game in hand.
On an uneven surface at Timberley, Audley and SSP&P served up a breathless and pulsating 2-2 draw. The league leaders struggled to get their passing game going on the difficult pitch and against a hard-working Audley outfit bent on correcting the wrongs of last week's errors. Audley also created four clear-cut chances and should have grabbed maximum points but were denied by an inspired ‘keeper in the Black ’n ’White’s goal.
P&P suffered another setback against an equally hard-working Timberley team, who, like Audley, ran their socks off and fought tooth and nail, fully deserving their point from a 1-1 draw.
Completing a cracking evening’s entertainment in Shard End, Audley kept their hopes of a play-off spot alive with an exciting 2-1 win over the Timbers. Both sides gave their all and left nothing on the pitch but the Glebesiders desire for the three points took them over the line and up to third place in the table.
Over at Yardley, Abbey were making hay and taking full advantage of SSP&P’s toils across in Shard End, as they defeated a hitherto unbeaten and 100% winning Yardley Youths side, 3-0. The Erdington side proved too strong for the Youths, who were without their main central defender the clash. At one down, Yardley had to chase the game and were picked off by Abbey counter-attacks. The result somewhat flattered Abbey but Youths gaffer, Mr Walmsley conceded after the game that the better side had won.
Despite this set-back, a top two finish is still in the offing for Mr Walmsley’s Youths who are eleven points behind P&P with four games in hand with the two set to meet on 15th May – week after P&P’s derby date with Abbey.
Other beneficiaries of the Black ‘n’ White’s disappointing night, were Hillstone and St Bernadette’s who still have outside chances of grabbing a play-off berth.
SSP&P's follies mean that its still all to play for in La Liga!
