CUP JOY FOR MARY AND JOHN'S!

By Joe Perkins

Debutants lift the Cup in style as Highfield taste final defeat again.

Newboys, SS Mary and John, broke Highfield hearts as the Erdington-based side denied the Alum Rockers to take home the prestigious ESPSFA Cup following a 2-0 final victory. In their debut in this tournament, Mary and John won all 7 games and were deserved winners. For Highfield there was little consolation as they had suffered a second consecutive Cup final defeat - Lyndon Green triumphed over them at the same stage last season.
The tournament saw 20 teams from across 16 schools taking part including one from outside of the ESPSFA family, Meriden. The group stages were littered with goals galore, thrills and spills and heartbreak for some including Yardley’s A side who missed out on a quarter final slot on goal difference in Group B, from which Brookfields and Abbey emerged.
The quarter finals then paired Mary and John with Mapledene, Audley A with Brookfields, Highfield B with SS P&P and Timberley with Abbey. Mary and John and Brookfields both enjoyed relatively comfortable passages courtesy of 3-1 wins, Abbey narrowly snuck past Timberley 2-1 and in a humdinger of a game, a dogged and resolute Highfield B manufactured a 1-0 win over SS P&P.
Mary and John were paired with Audley A in the semi-finals and tamed the Glebesiders, 4-1. Meanwhile, on the adjacent pitch, Highfield B were at it again, defying Abbey by a solitary goal to nil.
The final was a war of attrition but Mary and John eventually wore Highfield down and they sealed it with a sublime second goal worthy of the occasion.
And so the curtain comes down on another wonderful ESPSFA season, we’ll do it all again in September with some new faces on the block including SS Mary and John and they have already shown their intent. Bring it on!
