Corpus Stride to Summit!

By Joe Perkins

CC grab max points; Bell suffer first loss; Five-star Forest; Thorns go fourth; Firs hold 'dene.

Corpus Christi made the short trip over to Kitts Green and their double blast at Lea Forest’s Academy, maintained their unbeaten start to the season and catapulted them to the top of the table.
Corpus found Lea Forest half asleep in their opening game and took full advantage as Forest struggled to get going throughout. Corpus were ruthless in front of goal and were good value for their 3-1 win. CC backed up that win with another, but in more dramatic style. In a titanic battle with Brownmead, the yellow’n’blacks nicked the points as with the game locked at 1 apiece, a last-minute strike ensured a 2-1 win. In the evening’s other game, Forest went ‘nap-hand’ as they defeated an out-of-sorts Brownmead, 5-2.
Last season’s Premier champions, Harper Bell endured a mixed evening over in Nechells. Bell opened up against Brookfields and were caught napping by a lively ‘fields outfit who found themselves two up early on. Bell could not wake from their slumber until it was too late and had to settle for a last kick consolation effort. Brookfields were then involved in an attritional 1-1 draw with Alston; ‘fields bouncing back well after two defeats on the opening day. Alston then faced Harper Bell who were a different animal from their earlier game and Bell’s 2-0 win should have been more emphatic as they squandered two glorious opportunities to put gloss on the score-line.
Back across in Kitts Green, both Thornton and The Oval were assisted by Highfield’s ‘no-show’ so went into their game at The Oval with 4-0 wins under their belts. In a close game, keenly contested from the kick-off, Thornton grabbed the points in spectacular fashion, as, trailing 2-1 with just three minutes to go, the Thorns scored twice to win 3-2 and saw themselves rise to fourth in the table.
Over at Mapledene’s splendid Arena, bathed in glorious Sheldon sunshine, the ‘dene hosted Firs in a one-off fixture. Both sides gave their all, but neither did enough to make a break through and the game ended goal-less. ‘Dene never really got going and failed to test Firs’ ‘keeper in a game in which chances were thin on the ground and shots on target few and far between. ‘Dene boss Mr Collett wasn’t impressed with his charges and will be hoping for better next week when Brookfields and Thornton visit the Arena.
