Champs Back on Track!

By Joe Perkins

Abbey double up as Audley go on rampage.

Champions Abbey travelled across to Kingstanding and left with a maximum 6 points. They defeated Ward End 5-0 and edged a much tighter affair, 2-1, against home-side, Maryvale. Vale's recent performances have pleased boss Mr Phillips and a 1-1 draw against a hard-working Ward End outfit, left him happy with his side's progress in their first ESPSFA season.
After a wobbly start to their campaign, Audley have finally found their feet, and had their shooting boots on at Stud Lane. Pre-games, Audley's squad had been warned by gaffer Mr Aksar, that they needed to start performing or risk losing their places - his charges heeded the warning delivering in emphatic style: The Glebesiders sauntered past Cromwell, 15-0, then Short Heath, 7-1. Short Heath edged out Cromwell, 2-1 in the evening's other game, securing their first 3 points of the season in the process.
Over in Nechells, St Matthew's, E-ACT Nechells and Gunter shared 3 draws, all leaving with honours even. Gunter and home boys St Matthew's, shared 6 goals, while the other two games both ended 1 apiece.
The Fit4schools La Liga now takes a break until March as darker nights loom large. Abbey's six points sees the champions rise to second, 3 points behind old adversaries, SS P&P. In a concertinaed top five, where 6 points divide 1st and 5th, Audley nick ahead of Bernies and Hillstone on goal difference - all having played 6. One also must throw Yardley into the title mix, the Youths lie in 6th place, 4 points further back but have three games in hand on all those above them.
Exciting times ahead then when lighter nights and thoughts of spring sunshine home into view.
